Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP)

Founded in 1986, the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) is an international, multidisciplinary, professional organization with over 2400 members in 50 countries. AASP members work with athletes, coaches, nonsport performers (dancers, musicians), business professionals, and tactical occupations (military, firefighters, police) to optimize performance. AASP members have backgrounds in various areas, including sport science, social work, counseling, and clinical psychology. AASP promotes the development of science and ethical practice in the field of sport psychology and offers certification (Certified Consultant—AASP or CC- AASP) to qualified members with a master’s or doctorate degree who have met specific course requirements in sport psychology, have completed an extensive, supervised work experience to develop competency and passed a certification exam.
AASP produces three journals—Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Journal of Sport Psychology in Action, and Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology. AASP also publishes a Directory of Graduate Programs in Applied Sport Psychology, which provides detailed information for over 100 sport psychology programs in North America and abroad.
AASP holds a yearly professional conference in North America, believed to be the largest annual gathering of sport psychology professionals worldwide, with 1100-1200 attendees. Attendees come from various sport-related or psychology-related fields, including thought leaders in sport and exercise psychology and applied practitioners who work with pro/elite athletes and collegiate, high school, and youth sport populations. In addition, attendees include recognized academicians, sport psychology training program directors, researchers, and students.
