The term ‘abasement’ refers to the need for subordination in a social situation. It was introduced by Murray (1963) in the context of his need and need-press conceptualization to explain individual behavior in a certain constellation of a person with her or his current need and corresponding environmentally-induced requirements (press). Whereas leadership is considered in sport psychology, abasement is neglected up to now.
