In their article ‘Soccer Fan Violence: A Holistic Approach’, published in this issue of International Sociology, Ramon Spaaij and Alastair Anderson (S & A hereafter) take up the challenging task to come up with an overarching framework to understand the occurrence of soccer fan violence.They develop a rich and elaborate model that has the potential to move research on soccer hooliganism to a higher level. The authors skilfully blend research on national and local fault lines with micro-level analysis of situational interactions and tie the two together by reconceptualizing Bourdieu’s notion of habitus.
